Health Care Reform and Reproductive Health

Recent health care reform is a mixed bag for pro-choice supporters. In the wake of reform, insurance companies may be more inclined to opt out of coverage for abortion services. Ineffective abstinence-only sex education programs remain in place.

However, Medicaid recipients have expanded availability to a comprehensive package of reproductive health services. And significant increases are available in the rebates pharmaceutical manufacturers must offer to programs, including Title X family planning centers, under the 340B Drug Discount Program

Religion and Women’s Equality

M-triple-C acknowledges the struggle by mainstream Protestants and progressive Roman Catholics to secure an equal place for women within organized religion.

M-triple-C spearheaded a billboard campaign in McHenry County that gave voice to the pro-woman views of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (RCRC).

Nevertheless, there remain egregious violations of women’s dignity, grounded in repressive religious views, both at home and abroad.

A senior Iranian cleric has blamed the Icelandic volcano on the immodest behavior of women in his country.

Closer to home, in Wisconsin, the Wisconsin State Journal reports that “A Baraboo church doesn’t let women speak or vote as school principal is fired.” The principal’s infraction? According to the Journal:

“Hartwig’s father, a former pastor, authored a document years ago questioning Lutheran doctrine that says women shall not have authority over men. Church members say Hartwig, who has been principal since the summer of 2003, was accused of distributing that document to some members of the congregation.”

Help Send a Public Message

Celebrating the anniversary of Roe v. Wade is important and should remind everyone that the main focus of this decision is and should be, women, their lives and health. Justice Blackmun called it, “a step that had to be taken as we go down the road toward the full emancipation of women.”  The Supreme Court noted originally that “the ability of women to participate equally in the economic and social life of the Nation has been facilitated by their ability to control their reproductive lives.

MCCC activists have long felt strongly about countering the annual Right to Life (RTL) signature pages in the Northwest Herald which lists the names of anti-choice county residents who oppose a woman’s reproductive rights and appears near the Roe v. Wade anniversary.

The MCCC project of “Sending a Message” will give you an opportunity to show that the majority of the country and our county are pro-choice and appreciate the significance of Roe v. Wade to women’s lives. The MCCC designed ad (not lists of names) will appear in the Northwest Herald on January 22.

Please respond by sending a donation of $10, $20, $50, $100 or any amount to MCCC, Box 16, Woodstock, IL 60098.  And pass the word to family and friends!

Primary Voter Lists

Don’t forget that the Illinois Primaries will take place on February 2.

The views of county candidates on reproductive rights are important. Although these offices do not have jurisdiction over abortion policies, support of all reproductive rights including family planning and comprehensive sexuality education is essential at every level. County boards; school boards; committeemen, and city council members can influence decisions on issues vital to their communities’ ability to make rational decisions on public health policies and to meet the reproductive health needs of their citizens.

As elected officials these office holders will have the opportunity to exercise political leadership and impact public officials who are responsible for Illinois’ abortion policies. These offices are also often used as first steps in a political career.

Personal PAC has sent questionnaires to the candidates listed below to evaluate their positions on reproductive rights. Five candidates returned completed questionnaires. Three candidates were endorsed by Personal PAC. Although some other candidates have expressed pro-choice views, those views cannot be recognized if the Personal PAC questionnaires were not returned and those views documented.

MCCC does not endorse candidates.

NW Herald: Parallels between abortion, recession unclear

Dee Manny, president of McHenry County Citizens for Choice, said it wouldn’t be surprising if financial concerns became a more prominent factor in abortion considerations.

“Pregnancy is a medical condition, and people have to make their decision from a number of factors,” Manny said. “Certainly [the economy] has become a big issue.”
